Five Tips on How to Wear Neon Eye Make-Up

Neon beauty is hitting big right now. Selena Gomez recently posted her neon coral makeup to Instagram and highlighted how beautiful it could be. The makeup faded from the inner corners of her eyes for a spectacular look. Neon makeup also took center stage at Off-White’s AW21 Show. Here are our five tips on how to wear neon eye makeup at home to help you look your best.

1. Less is More

First and foremost, less is always more when it comes to neon makeup. It’s best to use neon as sparingly as possible. You don’t need to overdo it. Makeup should enhance your natural appearance, not take over from it. Add a little detail like a splash of color here and there – a bit on the inner corner of your eye or a small bit of eyeliner. A small amount makes a big impact.

2. Go Graphic

Makeup experts agree you should go graphic with the look. The graphical elements make it all look cooler and more modern. When applied properly, neon makeup is less makeup and more an accessory for your eyes. You can use tape and go over it with a pencil to create the graphic look. This gives the look an instant creative and modern feel to it, letting you be subtle and bold all at once. It’s fun getting to explore different ways to enhance natural features.

3. Avoid Lashes

Neon eye makeup should never go near the lash line. Ensure that the makeup doesn’t leak over into the lashes or lash line. You can clear away mistakes with a cotton swab dipped in micellar water, so don’t worry too much about it.

4. Keep Colors to a Minimum

The idea of less is more applies to colors as well as to the makeup itself. Neon is a bold statement by itself that you need to be shy about how much you apply. You don’t want to overdo it and look like you’re on your way to Coachella when you’re just trying to look good for a night out. Look for complimentary colors that go well together and don’t take over the whole look.

Stick to monochromatic colors for the graphic line. Some people do go a bit further, such as mixing blue and orange, but even then, it’s best to keep things minimal. A minimalistic look is often more powerful anyway. Using too much can make it come across as being tacky or gimmicky and takes away from the impact.

5. Leave Everything Else Natural

One of the great things about neon makeup is that it can be genderless – anyone can wear it and get the same effect. This is why it’s best to keep everything clean and simple by making sure that everything else is natural. Neon makeup works best with fresh skin. Don’t even apply blush or mascara. Pare it back as much as you can and let the neon speak for itself without any extra help from other makeup.
